Dalí & Schiaparelli

Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, Coco Chanel’s greatest rival, became famous for many things from making hot pink eternally cool, in fact NARS’ hot-fuchsia lipstick ‘Shiap’ is a homage to fashion icon Elsa Schiaparelli’s signature shade, to her collaborations with Salvador Dali. Along with Chanel, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in fashion between the two World Wars.

Schiaparelli dressed many prominent women including The Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson and actresses Mae West.

From shoe hats to lobster dresses, the installation explores the relationship between the artist and designer. It’s clear through the surreal timeline the installation takes, that Dali was a huge influence on Schiaparelli, both shocking the worlds of art and fashion.

Schiaparelli is noted for introducing many styles and techniques into the history. She was the first designer to create zippers in colours that matched the material used in her garments and was also the first to design a jumpsuit.

Imagination & Daring: Dalì and Schiaparelli will be on at the Dalí Museum, St Petersburg Florida, until January 14, 2018. Take a look at the images to get a taste of what you can expect!
